An Industrial White Paper by Tangshan Runxing Machinery Co., Ltd.
Canada is home to some of the world's most severe industrial environments. From the oil sands of Fort McMurray, Alberta, to the deep hard rock mines in Ontario and Quebec, machinery must operate in sub-zero temperatures down to -40°C while facing extreme mechanical stresses. The cost of unscheduled downtime in these sectors is measured in tens of thousands of dollars per hour.
In the oil sands extraction processes, equipment such as bucket wheels, dragline teeth, slurry pumps, and tailings pipes are subjected to intense sliding abrasion combined with heavy impact. In these areas, standard structural steels quickly wear down. To prevent rapid equipment loss, heavy-duty chromium carbide overlay (CCO) wear plates and high-alloy self-shielded flux-cored wires (FCAW-S) are used to maintain surfacing layers on-site.
"Information Gain: Implementing wear-resistant surfacing alloys reduces maintenance cycles by up to 300% in potash mines, coal-fired power stations, and iron ore extraction sites across Canada, saving operators millions in replacement components annually."
Hardfacing is the deposition of specialized alloy coatings onto wear-prone metal surfaces via arc welding. The primary objective is to form high concentrations of primary chromium carbides ($Cr_7C_3$) within a tough, supportive austenitic-martensitic iron matrix.
Tangshan Runxing Machinery's technical team utilizes advanced alloy formulations. Our flux-cored wires incorporate precise balances of Carbon (C), Chromium (Cr), and micro-alloys like Niobium (Nb), Boron (B), and Tungsten (W). Niobium addition creates extremely hard, finely dispersed niobium carbides ($NbC$), which significantly block micro-cutting mechanisms under intense pressure, maintaining structural stability even at elevated temperatures.
Operating in Canada requires compliance with rigorous national standards. Welding operations in Canadian provinces must align with guidelines established by the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) under CSA Standards (specifically CSA W47.1 and CSA W59). To ensure structural integrity, any material applied for rebuilding structural elements must possess validated mechanical characteristics and chemistry.
