Understanding the material science behind chromium carbide overlay technology

The durability of a hardfaced surface depends on its microscopic structure. Runxing's flux-cored welding wires deposit a high concentration of primary chromium carbides (M7C3) within a tough, supportive austenitic iron matrix.

  • Primary Chromium Carbides (M7C3): Hexagonal carbides form when chromium levels exceed 25% and carbon exceeds 4%, providing a microhardness range of 1200 to 1600 HV to resist abrasive minerals.
  • Austenitic Solid Solution Matrix: The supporting matrix absorbs mechanical impacts, preventing the carbides from breaking out under high-stress conditions.
  • Stress Relief Checking Pattern: Fine, transverse surface cracks form naturally during cooling. These cracks relieve tension in the overlay without passing into the base steel, preventing delamination.
  • High Deposition Efficiency: Our flux-cored wires are formulated for high metal recovery rates, low slag volume, and high welding speeds.

Our chromium carbide overlay (CCO) wear plates typically provide a service life that is 5 to 10 times longer than standard carbon structural steel (such as Q235B or Q345B) and 2 to 3 times longer than quenched and tempered abrasion-resistant steels, depending on the severity of the wear environment.
Do we need external shielding gas when using Runxing's hardfacing flux-cored wire? +
We offer both gasless (self-shielded) and gas-shielded flux-cored wires. Our self-shielded wires generate their own shielding gas from elements within the flux core, making them suitable for outdoor applications, windy sites, and on-site maintenance in Vietnam's industrial facilities.
Can the wear plates be cut, bent, and welded to custom shapes? +
Yes. The mild steel base plate allows for conventional structural welding to your equipment frame. The plate can be cold-rolled to contour shapes and cut using plasma arc processes. We can also pre-fabricate custom liners at our factory according to your project drawings.
