What is the microstructure of a Chromium Carbide Overlay (CCO) plate?

The overlay microstructures contain a high volume of primary M7C3 chromium carbides embedded in an austenitic matrix. During the weld deposition process, chromium and carbon precipitate into hexagonal chromium carbide crystals (with hardness exceeding 1500 HV). This structure is supported by the tougher austenitic matrix, which absorbs impacts while resisting abrasive particle scratching.

Can CCO plates be cut and welded using conventional shop equipment?

Yes. The structural backing plate (typically standard carbon steel Q235B or ASTM A36) allows for conventional fabrication. The plate can be cut from the backing side using plasma arc cutting. It is joined to structural components via plug welding, stud welding, or countersunk bolting. The hard overlay face cannot be machined or cut with gas; all shaping must be performed from the backing plate side or via plasma/abrasive waterjet cutting.

Why do bimetallic wear plates show hairline cracks on the surface?

These hairline cracks are called stress-relief cracks. They form naturally during the high-temperature weld deposition process. As the cladding alloy cools, the difference in thermal contraction rates between the backing steel and the chromium carbide layer creates stress. The relief cracks occur perpendicular to the welding bead, ending at the boundary of the backing plate. These cracks do not reduce wear performance or cause delamination.
