Runxing's Chromium Carbide Overlay (CCO) plates are developed by welding a highly wear-resistant alloy formulation onto a structural steel base (mostly Q235B or Q355). This creates a metallurgical bond that combines the ductility of the structural plate with the extreme hardness of the overlay.
Our overlay contains a high concentration of primary chromium carbides ($Cr_7C_3$) embedded in a tough eutectic matrix. The microscopic hardness of these hexagonal primary carbides exceeds 1200 HV, whereas standard abrasive grains like quartz measure around 900-1000 HV. During abrasive wear, the hard carbides act as barriers, preventing the abrasive media from cutting through the matrix.
This bimetallic structure is compliant with DIN 8555 standards. It allows plates to be welded, formed, and bolted, making them much easier to fabricate and install than solid alloy castings or heat-treated manganese plates.

Quenched & Tempered (Q&T) steels derive their wear resistance from martensitic heat treatment, but they are limited to a surface hardness of about 400 to 500 HBW, and their performance drops significantly at elevated temperatures. Runxing's Chromium Carbide Overlay (CCO) plates utilize a hypereutectic microstructure where chromium primary carbides ($Cr_7C_3$) are dispersed within a matrix. This overlay delivers a surface hardness of 58-62 HRC (600-750 HV) that does not degrade, maintaining abrasion resistance at high temperatures (up to 350°C for standard plates, and higher for custom alloy variations).
No. The cracks visible on the overlay surface are standard stress-relief cracks, which are normal for this type of material. During the hardfacing process, cooling of the high-alloy deposit causes residual stress build-up. The formation of these transverse cracks relieves this tension without reducing the bonding of the overlay to the backing plate, and they do not propagate into the mild steel base.
Due to the extreme hardness of the overlay, CCO plates cannot be cut with conventional mechanical saws or oxygen-fuel torches. Instead, they must be cut using plasma arc, laser, or waterjet cutting systems. They can be installed using plug welding, countersunk bolts, or by stud-welding structural threaded bolts to the mild steel backing plate. For curved installations, they can be formed in rolls with the overlay on the inside or outside radius, depending on the minimum diameter guidelines.
