View Technical SpecsEthiopia is undergoing a monumental industrial transformation. Driven by massive infrastructure projects, such as the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), comprehensive transport networks, and expanding industrial parks in Bole Lemi, Adama, and Hawassa, the demand for primary raw materials has skyrocketed. Consequently, the mining, cement, and quarrying sectors are operating under extreme operational capacities. High-stress wear on heavy machinery has emerged as a primary bottleneck for continuous productivity.
The geologic structures across Ethiopia, particularly in regions surrounding Addis Ababa, Dire Dawa, and the Muger Valley, yield minerals containing significant silica content. During cement clinker production and quarry crushing operations, machinery surfaces encounter intense three-body abrasion. Standard carbon steel and conventional quenched-and-tempered alloy plates (such as AR400 or AR500) fail to withstand this relentless grinding abrasion, wearing down prematurely and leading to unscheduled outages.
For Ethiopian industrial facilities, import logistics via the Port of Djibouti can introduce supply chain delays. Minimizing equipment downtime is essential. Integrating premium **Chromium Carbide Overlay (CCO) wear plates** and bimetallic composites directly into the plant design extends equipment lifetime by 5 to 10 times compared to structural steels. This delivers a substantial return on investment (ROI) and ensures stable operating lines for local enterprises.
Understanding the physics of wear protection requires examining the microstructure of bimetallic plates. Runxing’s CCO wear plates are manufactured using a specialized open-arc welding system. The base plate is typically structural carbon steel (like Q235B or Q355B), which provides structural flexibility, toughness, and allows the composite plate to be welded, formed, or bolted onto structural frames.
The hardfacing layer is deposited through a dedicated flux-cored wire chemistry rich in Chromium (25-35%) and Carbon (3.5-5.5%). Under highly controlled welding thermal cycles, these elements form **M7C3 primary chromium carbides** embedded in a tough, eutectic matrix. The volume fraction of these primary carbides exceeds 35% in our standard RX-wp series, with a micro-hardness exceeding 1200 HV.
Crucially, our automated welding heads ensure that these hexagonal M7C3 carbides orient perpendicular to the wear surface. This vertical orientation acts as a barrier to incoming abrasive particulates, preventing scratching and plowing actions. Standard alloy steels contain carbides oriented parallel to the plate direction, which are easily washed away by sliding minerals. The perpendicular micro-structure is the foundation of our plates' exceptional durability.

See Case Study >The global industrial landscape is shifting toward high-efficiency materials to support sustainability goals. Industrial operators are prioritizing material science breakthroughs to reduce resource consumption. Runxing is actively investing in new alloy developments to address these evolving demands.
Our current technical roadmap focuses on the integration of **complex carbides (Nb, Ti, W, B)** into the iron matrix. The addition of small amounts of Niobium creates micro-precipitates that refine primary chromium carbides, increasing resistance to high stress abrasion. Adding Boron helps lower the melting temperature during welding, reducing dilution with the base steel.
Furthermore, automated production is a core driver for quality stability. Our next-generation welding stations use real-time temperature feedback loop controls to manage pre-heat and interpass temperatures. This minimizes residual tensile stresses, reducing the micro-cracking pitch to less than 15mm. These controlled relief cracks protect the bimetallic plate from delamination when subjected to thermal cycling up to 350°C.
