Contact Technical StaffThe cracks visible on CCO wear plates are stress-relief cracks. They form naturally during the high-temperature welding process as the weld pool cools and shrinks. These cracks only occur in the hard overlay layer and do not penetrate the structural steel base plate. They are essential to prevent the composite plate from warping and do not compromise wear performance during operation.
Because the overlay layer is extremely hard (often 58-62 HRC), standard mechanical band saws or oxy-fuel torches cannot cut through it. CCO plates must be cut from the base-metal side using high-definition plasma arc cutting or waterjet systems. They can also be formed and rolled into curves or pipes using heavy plate bending machines, keeping the overlay on either the inside or outside surface depending on application needs.
We perform ASTM G65 dry sand/rubber wheel abrasion testing to measure volumetric material loss. This standard simulates severe sliding abrasion, ensuring that our production runs meet or exceed the performance thresholds required for high-abrasion environments.
