Frequently Asked Questions

Standard quenched-and-tempered (Q&T) steel plates like Hardox rely on martensitic hardness (typically 400–500 HBW) throughout the steel alloy. In contrast, CCO plates feature a mild backing plate overlaid with a layer of chromium carbide. This layer contains primary Cr7C3 carbides with a microhardness of 58–62 HRC (around 700–800 HBW). Under severe sliding abrasion, CCO plates outlast Q&T steels by 4 to 10 times, making them highly cost-effective for high-wear zones.

Yes. Our wear plates can be formed and welded. They can be cold rolled to a minimum radius depending on the plate thickness (typically 20-30 times the plate thickness) with the hardfacing layer on the inside or outside. Welding is straightforward because the structural backing layer is made of weldable carbon steel (such as Q235B or Q345B). You can weld the backing plate directly to your machine's structure or use plug weld holes, stud bolts, or custom countersunk fasteners.

Stress-relief cracks are a normal characteristic of bimetallic CCO plates. They occur during the cooling phase of the weld surfacing process to relieve residual thermal stresses. These cracks run perpendicular to the bead direction and stop at the boundary of the ductile carbon steel backing. They do not compromise the plate's structural integrity or wear resistance; instead, they prevent warping during installation and operation.
