Industrial components in steel mills, cement plants, mines, and power generation facilities are subjected to aggressive mechanical destruction. Surface deterioration occurs primarily through sliding abrasion, high-velocity erosion, impact stresses, and localized corrosion. Standard structural steels and even conventional quenched-and-tempered (Q&T) alloys lack the microstructural profile required to withstand continuous abrasive bombardment.
This is where Chromium Carbide Overlay (CCO) bimetallic wearplates play a critical role. Comprising a ductile structural backing plate (such as Q235B steel) clad with a high-alloy, weld-deposited surface, CCO plates provide a dual benefit: structural weldability and unmatched wear-resistant hardness.
By shifting the primary interface to a chromium-dense alloy deposit, systems experience up to a 10x improvement in operation lifecycle over structural steel, minimizing unplanned shutdowns and reducing long-term plant maintenance costs.

Read More About Us >Sourcing from Tangshan Runxing Machinery means tapping directly into Hebei Province’s premier industrial steel manufacturing hub. Our factory utilizes cutting-edge production systems, including four-gun automatic overlay welding gantries, to deliver bimetallic sheets with optimal carbide uniformity and flat profiles.
The wear resistance of bimetallic overlay plates depends on the morphology, size, and distribution of the hard carbide phases. Under thermal surfacing conditions, chromium and carbon react to form M7C3 primary chromium carbides. The volume fraction of these primary carbides should ideally range between 30% and 50% to prevent brittleness while maintaining maximum surface protection.
| Alloy Element | Carbon (C) | Chromium (Cr) | Manganese (Mn) | Silicon (Si) | Microhardness |

Technical explanations and answers to common questions about bimetallic wearplates and hardfacing alloys
Quenched & Tempered (Q&T) steels like Hardox are structural steel alloys hardened through heat treatment, offering uniform hardness (typically 400-500 HBW) throughout the plate. CCO wear plates are bimetallic composites consisting of a mild steel base plate clad with a high-alloy overlay. The overlay contains primary M7C3 chromium carbides with microhardness ratings up to 1500 HV. CCO plates deliver up to 5-10 times the wear life of Q&T steels in severe sliding abrasion applications, though they are less suitable for high-impact environments.
Yes. CCO plates feature a mild steel backing (typically Q235B or ASTM A36) that allows them to be welded directly to existing structures using standard low-hydrogen welding consumables. They can be cut to shape using plasma arc or laser systems (cutting from the backing side is recommended). CCO plates can also be cold formed or rolled into curves and cylinders, with the overlay on the inner or outer face depending on the application.
Surface check cracks are normal and occur during the weld overlay process. Rapid thermal contraction during cooling creates relief cracks in the carbide surface. These cracks stop at the fusion line and do not propagate into the ductile backing steel. They help relieve internal stress and do not affect the plate's wear resistance.
Standard CCO plates are suitable for operating temperatures up to 350°C (660°F). For high-temperature environments (up to 650°C), we add alloying elements such as Niobium (Nb), Tungsten (W), Cobalt (Co), or Boron (B) to stabilize the carbide structure and prevent softening.
