The Metallurgy of Chromium Carbide Overlays (CCO)

Chromium Carbide Overlay (CCO) plates represent the pinnacle of cost-effective wear protection in high-abrasion industrial environments. The manufacturing process of high-quality CCO plates involves the open-arc or submerged-arc deposition of a highly alloyed chromium-carbide weld material onto a structural steel base plate (typically Q235B, Q345B, or ASTM A36).

During cooling, the weld deposit forms a microscopic structure populated by primary M7C3 chromium carbides. These needle-like carbides have a hardness reaching 1500 to 2000 HV (Vickers Hardness Scale), oriented perpendicular to the wear surface. This specific orientation is critical, as it acts as an impenetrable barrier to sliding abrasive media, such as quartz, sinter, clinker, or coal particles.

Key Metallurgical Characteristic: Stress Relief Cracks. The appearance of fine, transverse cracks across the overlay surface is a normal physical phenomenon. These cracks are structural relief channels that occur during the cooling of the alloy overlay due to the difference in coefficient of thermal expansion between the substrate and the cladding. They relieve residual stresses, preventing warping or spalling during installation and service.

Information Gain & Guidance

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Overlay Plates & Sourcing

1. What is the composition and hardness profile of Runxing's Chromium Carbide Overlay (CCO) Plates? +
Our standard CCO plates consist of high-carbon, high-chromium hypereutectic alloys deposited onto standard structural steels. The hardfacing overlay contains a volume fraction of primary M7C3 carbides exceeding 35%, achieving a bulk surface hardness between 58 and 62 HRC. This configuration offers exceptional resistance to sliding wear and grinding abrasion.
2. How does Runxing manage the dilution rate during the cladding process? +
By utilizing our advanced Runxing® automated CNC multi-gun surfacing systems, we tightly control the welding parameters (arc voltage, current, travel speed, and swing rate). This keeps the dilution rate (mixing of the alloy overlay with the base steel carbon substrate) below 10% in the second layer, ensuring that the primary carbide chemistry remains optimal throughout the wear layer.
3. Can CCO Wear Plates be formed, cut, and welded to custom geometries? +
Yes, our overlay plates are designed to be fabricated. They can be cut using plasma arc cutting, water jet, or carbon arc gouging (cutting from the backing steel side is recommended). They can also be cold-formed or rolled into cylinders and cones, keeping the clad overlay on the inside. Because the base plate is structural carbon steel, the wear plates can be welded directly to existing structures using low-hydrogen structural electrodes.
4. Why are there cracks across the face of the overlay, and do they affect performance? +
These transverse cracks are known as stress relief cracks. They occur naturally as the high-alloy weld pool cools and shrinks relative to the tougher backing plate. These cracks do not compromise the integrity of the plate; rather, they prevent severe structural distortion and warpage during installations. They do not propagate into the base steel plate under normal operating conditions.
5. What export protocols do you use to ensure secure delivery and logistics? +
To focus our efforts on metallurgical manufacturing quality, all international trade processes, customs clearances, export compliance, transport documents, and financial settlements are managed by our exclusive exporting partner, Hebei Yuwan International Trade Co., Ltd. This ensures seamless international logistics and trade compliance.
6. How does a bimetallic CCO plate perform compared to conventional Quenched and Tempered (Q&C) AR steels? +
Conventional wear steels (like AR400 or AR500) rely on martensitic microstructures that wear down quickly under heavy abrasives. Runxing's CCO plates contain hard M7C3 carbides with hardness levels of 1500-2000 HV embedded in a tough matrix. Depending on the abrasive media, our CCO plates typically outlast traditional quenched and tempered steels by 3 to 10 times, saving overall maintenance costs.
