The manufacturing process of high-quality CCO plates involves the open-arc or submerged-arc deposition of a highly alloyed chromium-carbide weld material onto a structural steel base plate (typically Q235B, Q345B, or ASTM A36).
During cooling, the weld deposit forms a microscopic structure populated by primary M7C3 chromium carbides. These needle-like carbides have a hardness reaching 1500 to 2000 HV (Vickers Hardness Scale), oriented perpendicular to the wear surface. This specific orientation is critical, as it acts as an impenetrable barrier to sliding abrasive media, such as quartz, sinter, clinker, or coal particles.
