1. Global Industrial Landscape of Hardfacing & Wear Resistance

In modern industrial operations, friction, abrasion, and mechanical impact represent primary drivers of equipment downtime and capital loss. Globally, heavy industries such as mining, cement manufacturing, steel production, and power generation lose billions of dollars annually due to the physical degradation of component surfaces. Hardfacing welding—the process of applying a layer of wear-resistant alloy to a substrate material via thermal deposition—has transitioned from a basic maintenance repair method to a crucial pillar of surface engineering.

By deposition of chromium carbide overlay (CCO) or complex bimetallic carbide structures onto standard carbon steel, engineers can design components that exhibit the mechanical strength of structural steel combined with the superior wear resistance of high-alloy castings. This approach significantly reduces the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). Rather than replacing entire assemblies, industries can continuously repair and refurbish critical zones, saving raw materials, energy, and minimizing plant shutdown windows.

The Economics of Surface Engineering

Studies show that using hardfaced components like CCO wear plates can extend the service lifespan of hoppers, chutes, and grinding rollers by 300% to 500% compared to standard structural steel (such as Q235B or Q345B). This translates directly into a higher ROI for infrastructure and processing operations globally.

3. Chinese Factory Efficiency & Global Supply Chain Integration

The global sourcing dynamics for hardfacing materials and wear plates have shifted significantly toward China. The reasons go beyond low labor costs, encompassing structural advantages in supply chain integration and raw material access:

  • Proximity to Raw Materials: Located in Tangshan, the heart of China's steel industry, our facility has direct access to high-grade structural steel base plates and raw alloying materials (such as ferrochromium, carbon, and manganese powders). This ensures minimized logistics costs and reliable raw material supply.
  • Advanced R&D Collaborations: Runxing Machinery actively works with scientific institutions, including academic exchanges with leaders of Tangshan University and the Metal Materials and Forming Technology team. This partnership bridges academic metallurgical research with hands-on industrial fabrication.
  • Automation at Scale: Utilizing automated multi-gun cladding machines, we achieve highly uniform deposit layers, controlled dilution rates, and tight flatness tolerances that conform to DIN 8555 requirements.

4. Industry Trends: The Evolution of Surface Cladding

The hardfacing industry is undergoing rapid technological transformation. Manufacturers must adapt to these trends to remain competitive:

🤖

Automated & CNC Cladding

Modern vertical mill rollers and massive wear plates are welded using multi-axis CNC machines. This guarantees consistent dilution, minimal warping, and predictable bead heights.

♻️

Eco-Friendly Material Design

Development of chromium-free hardfacing alloys to eliminate hexavalent chromium hazards during on-site welding, satisfying modern occupational safety standards.

💎

Complex Carbide Matrices

Transitioning from basic chromium carbide deposits to complex carbide structures incorporating niobium, titanium, and boron to combat high-stress grinding abrasion at elevated temperatures.

5. Technical Comparison: CCO Wear Plates vs. Quenched Hardened Steel

Procurement managers often face a choice between standard quenched and tempered wear plates (such as AR400, AR500) and bimetallic Chromium Carbide Overlay (CCO) plates. Understanding the metallurgy behind these options is critical for making informed purchasing decisions:

Metric Quenched & Tempered (AR500) Runxing CCO Wear Plate (RX®wp 7600)
Bulk Hardness 470 - 530 HBW 58 - 62 HRC (nominal bulk)
Microstructure Hardness Martensite matrix (~500 HV) Primary Cr7C3 Carbides (~1500-1800 HV) in eutectic matrix
Wear Mechanism Resistance Moderate sliding and low impact Severe sliding abrasion and grinding
Service Temperature Limit Max 250°C (temper softening occurs) Up to 350°C (Standard) / 600°C (Specialized Complex Carbides)
Weldability & Fabrication Requires strict preheating to avoid cracking Easy plug-welding and structural backing attachment

6. Strategic Global Sourcing and Procurement Considerations

International buyers, project planners, and engineering firms sourcing hardfacing products from China should verify several technical parameters to ensure consistent batch quality:

  • Dilution Rate Control: High-quality hardfacing overlay requires minimal dilution of the base material. The chemical analysis must show high levels of Cr (typically 25–35%) and C (typically 4.0–5.5%) at the outer surface.
  • Crack Patterns (Relief Cracks): Micro-cracking perpendicular to the weld bead is a natural mechanism to relieve thermal stress during cladding. These cracks should not penetrate through the base plate.
  • Backing Plate Selection: Q235B is standard, but specialized structural projects require ASTM A36, Q345B (S355JR), or heat-resistant grades. Runxing customizes backing material according to user specifications.

Technical FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Get professional answers directly from our metallurgical engineers regarding hardfacing wear plates and welding wires.

What is the difference between open-arc (self-shielded) and gas-shielded hardfacing wire?
Open-arc or self-shielded flux-cored wire contains special deoxidizing and gas-generating ingredients inside the flux core, forming a protective slag and gas shield during welding. This eliminates the need for external shielding gas (like Argon or CO2), making it ideal for outdoor, windy on-site maintenance work. Gas-shielded wire, on the other hand, typically produces less slag and offers high deposit efficiency, but is better suited for controlled factory environments.
Why do relief cracks appear on chromium carbide overlay (CCO) wear plates?
Relief cracks are a normal characteristics of high-alloy CCO wear plates. Because the hardfacing layer is extremely hard and brittle (58-62 HRC), it naturally develops transverse micro-cracks during cooling to relieve residual thermal stress. These cracks prevent the steel plate from warping and do not compromise the wear resistance or structural integrity of the backing plate.
Can bimetallic composite steel plates be formed, bent, or cut?
Yes, our bimetallic plates can be cut using plasma arc cutting, waterjet cutting, or laser cutting (always cutting from the mild steel backing side to prevent contamination). They can also be cold formed and rolled into curved shapes (such as chutes, pipes, and conveyor liners) with the hardfacing layer facing either inward or outward, depending on the application.
How does Runxing Machinery manage international transactions and shipping?
To ensure compliant and secure transactions, all our export business is handled by Hebei Yuwan International Trade Co., Ltd. They handle shipping, customs clearance, letters of credit, and payment collection. This allows our factory in Tangshan to focus entirely on metallurgy, product quality, and meeting tight delivery schedules.
What quality standards do your hardfacing materials comply with?
Our hardfacing materials and wear plates are manufactured and categorized according to international industry classifications. This includes the DIN 8555 standard for overlay welding products (e.g., matching classifications like MSG 10-GF-60-G) and testing methods like the ASTM G65 Dry Sand Rubber Wheel Abrasion Test, ensuring reliable performance in demanding environments.
