Technical Whitepaper: Metallurgy & Chemistry of Hypereutectic Chromium Carbide

In the field of industrial surface hardfacing, not all chromium carbide overlays are created equal. The wear resistance of a Chromium Carbide Overlay (CCO) plate is fundamentally determined by its microstructural characteristics, specifically the morphology, size, and volume fraction of primary M7C3 chromium carbides. At Runxing Machinery, our advanced open-arc and submerged-arc welding processes produce a hypereutectic microstructural matrix, wherein the chromium content exceeds the eutectic point, prompting the crystallization of hard, hexagonal primary M7C3 carbides within a tough, iron-rich austenite matrix.

Understanding the M7C3 Crystalline Structure

The primary M7C3 carbide phase possesses a microhardness of approximately 1200 to 1600 HV (Vickers), which is significantly harder than standard silica sand, quartz, and coal minerals. By precisely controlling the heat input during our automated welding processes, we ensure that these hexagonal rods grow perpendicular to the backing steel plate. This vertical orientation acts as a structural shield; as abrasive particles slide across the plate's surface, they encounter the cross-sections of these dense carbide rods, preventing the cutting action that typically ruins carbon steel and conventional quenched alloy steel plates (such as AR400 or AR500).

Information Gain Metric: Standard hardened steel plates (Q&T) rely on martensitic hardness, which breaks down rapidly when temperatures exceed 250°C. Runxing's Chromium Carbide Overlay Plates preserve their structural hardness and wear protection at temperatures up to 600°C, making them the default choice for sinter screening, cement preheaters, and blast furnace hopper systems.

The China Factory Advantage: Manufacturing Superiority in Hebei

Tangshan Runxing Machinery Co., Ltd. sits in Tangshan, Hebei, the center of China's metallurgy, coke, and steel manufacturing. This geographic location provides three critical strategic advantages for our global wholesale procurement partners:

  1. Integrated Supply Chain: Our factory sources raw steel backing plates directly from top-tier domestic steel manufacturers in Hebei, eliminating domestic transit overheads and ensuring consistent plate tolerances (complying with ASTM A36 / Q235B standards).
  2. State-of-the-Art Automation: Our custom-developed automated 4-gun cladding systems provide incredibly uniform weld beads with minimal dilution. Low base-metal dilution preserves the alloy purity of the top overlay layer, resulting in high chromium concentration from the first millimeter of deposition.
  3. Streamlined Custom Fabrication: Our on-site machining shop is equipped with large-scale plasma cutting beds, press brakes, and rolling machines. We don't just sell standard 1.5m x 3.0m plates; we deliver finished, bolt-ready, custom-rolled liners, segmented pipelines, and complex hopper assemblies according to your CAD specifications.

Global Procurement Strategies & Strategic Partnership with Hebei Yuwan

To guarantee a smooth, risk-free import process for overseas buyers, all international trade and financial clearing are managed exclusively by our authorized partner, Hebei Yuwan International Trade Co., Ltd.. This institutional setup allows our engineering team in Tangshan to focus on what they do best—metallurgical quality control, automated R&D, and custom fabrication—while the international trade team handles customs documentation, sea/rail logistics, letters of credit (L/C), and compliance audits.

Whether you are a mining operator in South America, a cement plant engineer in Europe, or a dredging contractor in Southeast Asia, our logistics network ensures timely and secure delivery. Runxing's products have established a strong market reputation across Russia, Central Asia, South Africa, and Latin America through exhibitions like South Africa Africa 2024 and EXPOMIN 2023.

Next-Gen Technology Trends in Surface Hardfacing

As heavy industries target carbon-neutral operations, reducing equipment weight and increasing thermal efficiency are critical. Modern research is shifting toward complex multi-alloy configurations, introducing elements like Niobium (Nb), Boron (B), and Titanium (Ti) to form complex carbonitrides. These micro-alloys refine the chromium carbide grain structure, improving toughness without compromising hardness. Runxing is at the forefront of this technology, researching lightweight composite backing systems and nano-structured hardfacing alloys with Tangshan University to provide lighter, thinner, and more wear-resistant components.

Technical Q&A / Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the precise chemical composition of Runxing's standard Chromium Carbide Overlay (CCO) plates?
Our standard RX®wp 7600 plates feature a deposition alloy layer with 4.0% to 5.5% Carbon (C) and 25% to 35% Chromium (Cr). This ratio ensures a high concentration of primary M7C3 carbides. The base plate is typically weldable Q235B or Q345B structural carbon steel, though custom backing alloys like stainless steel or high-tensile steels can be requested.
2. Why are there cracks across the face of the overlay plates, and do they affect performance?
The transverse cracking visible on the overlay surface is normal and is known as stress-relief cracking. These cracks occur naturally during solidification of the hard metal overlay because of differences in thermal contraction between the cladding and the backing steel. They relieve residual stress and prevent the plate from warping or delaminating. They do not compromise the wear resistance and do not propagate into the backing plate.
3. Can Chromium Carbide plates be formed, bent, or rolled?
Yes. While the overlay layer is brittle, the ductile carbon steel backing allows cold forming. You can roll or curve CCO plates using heavy rolling equipment. For inner curves (overlay on the inside), the relief cracks close up, and for outer curves (overlay on the outside), the cracks open slightly. They can also be cut to size using plasma arc cutting, but not conventional oxy-fuel gas cutting.
4. What is the difference between open-arc and submerged-arc hardfacing?
Open-arc welding uses gasless flux-cored wires (often self-shielding), which creates a visible arc and allows faster, highly visible automated overlaying. Submerged-arc welding uses a granular flux layer to cover the arc, shielding it from atmospheric nitrogen and oxygen. Submerged-arc produces a smoother bead profile, minimal spatter, and very consistent alloy properties. We utilize both technologies depending on specific application specs and plate thickness.
5. How does Runxing guarantee quality during international shipments?
All our export business is managed by Hebei Yuwan International Trade Co., Ltd. Each batch of plates undergoes visual checking, thickness verification (measured across the base and overlay), and hardness testing (HRC). Testing certificates (MTR) are provided for each batch. Plates are packed on steel skids and strapped securely to ensure they arrive undamaged.
6. Can these wear plates be welded directly to existing structures?
Yes. You can weld the ductile backing steel to your existing structure (such as a chute or hopper wall) using standard low-hydrogen welding consumables (like E7018). Alternatively, we can install pre-welded threaded studs on the back of the plate, or create countersunk plug-welding holes for bolt-on installation.
7. How does a CCO plate perform in high-temperature environments?
Standard CCO plates operate effectively up to 550°C - 600°C. Above this temperature, the matrix structure begins to soften, and oxidation accelerates. For higher temperature applications, we offer custom-formulated alloys containing addition of niobium, tungsten, or vanadium, which maintain structural integrity up to 900°C.
8. What is the typical service life increase compared to quenched and tempered steels?
In applications characterized by severe sliding abrasion (such as sand, coal, or ore chutes), Runxing CCO plates typically outlast traditional AR400/AR500 steel plates by 4 to 8 times, and outlast carbon steel by up to 15 times, lowering maintenance overheads and reducing equipment downtime.
