Request Machinery SpecsA technological deep dive into modern wear protection systems, metallurgical optimization, and CNC hardfacing integration.
In modern industrial manufacturing and heavy maintenance sectors, wear and abrasion represent major challenges to structural integrity, operating costs, and overall plant uptime. Across the globe, heavy industries such as cement manufacturing, mining excavation, iron and steel production, power generation, and port dredging lose billions of dollars annually to equipment wear. To address this, Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) hardfacing has emerged as a premier technology. It offers an optimal balance of deposition rate, mechanical properties, and operator versatility compared to alternative methods like Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) or Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW).
As a leading OEM welding machine FCAW manufacturer, Tangshan Runxing Machinery Co., Ltd. has spent over a decade studying wear characteristics in high-stress operational environments. The global shift toward automation has transformed how industrial wear plates and complex mechanical parts are resurfaced. Today's industrial developers demand integrated solutions where high-chrome alloying materials, automated deposition systems, and programmable CNC paths work in tandem. This ensures predictable wear patterns, decreases downtime, and yields a significant return on investment.
Unlike standard surface welding, true wear-resistant hardfacing relies on the creation of primary M7C3 chromium carbides. The size, distribution, and chemistry of these carbides are determined by the thermal output of the FCAW equipment, cooling rates, and wire formulation. Automated control of these parameters prevents micro-cracking propagation into the substrate.
The core of any hardfacing process is the selection and deposition of high-alloy flux-cored wires. Self-shielded flux-cored wire (such as the RX® wear series) does not require an external gas supply. Instead, it relies on gas-forming elements within the flux core to protect the weld pool. This makes it highly portable and ideal for field repairs, even in high-wind outdoor environments.
Conversely, automated welding systems require uniform control of swing arc patterns, voltage fluctuations, and feed speed. As an OEM manufacturer, Tangshan Runxing integrates advanced technologies into its systems:
| Welding Method | Deposition Efficiency | Primary Carbide Structure | Best Application Environment | Gas Protection Needed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FCAW Self-Shielded | 80% - 85% | M7C3 Chromium Carbides (HRC 58-62) | On-site repair, outdoor pipelines, chute liners | No (Self-Shielded) |
| FCAW Gas-Shielded | 85% - 90% | Fine Borocarbides / Carbides (HRC 60-65) | In-plant fabrication, precision rebuilding | Yes (CO2 or Ar/CO2 mix) |
| Submerged Arc (SAW) | 95% - 98% | Heavy Carbides Overlay (HRC 55-60) | Continuous heavy rolling mill repair, flat wear plates | Flux Bed Covered |
Under microscope inspection, the high-chromium bimetallic wear plate reveals a composite structure: a ductile carbon steel base backing plate (for structure and weldability) fused with a hardfaced overlay containing hexagonal chromium-carbide crystals (Cr7C3). These crystals are embedded in a tough, eutectic matrix.
Standard products, such as the RX®wp 7600, are designed to align with DIN 8555 specifications. Achieving the necessary balance of hardness and fracture toughness requires a high concentration of carbon and chromium. This chemistry promotes the formation of primary chromium carbides, which resist abrasive scratching and scraping forces.

FCAW (Flux-Cored Arc Welding) provides a continuous feed process that significantly reduces downtime associated with changing stick electrodes (SMAW). It offers a higher deposition rate (commonly 3–8 kg/h compared to SMAW's 1–2 kg/h) and greater penetration. The flux core contains alloying elements that allow for customization of the weld pool chemistry to meet specific hardness and toughness requirements.
CCO plates are composite materials. The base plate is typically made of a ductile structural steel (like Q235B or Q355), which absorbs structural impacts and allows the plate to be welded or bolted. The top overlay is highly alloyed with chromium and carbon to form hard Cr7C3 carbides. For applications involving high impact, we formulate specific alloys containing nickel, manganese, or niobium to improve the toughness of the matrix.
These surface cracks are known as "stress relief cracks." They form naturally during the cooling process of high-chromium overlays due to the differences in thermal contraction between the backing plate and the overlay. These cracks are normal and do not affect the plate's wear resistance, provided they do not penetrate the mild steel backing plate.
Our CNC surfacing equipment allows operators to adjust parameters including welding speed, swing width, oscillation frequency, step distance, and arc voltage. With a 4-gun configuration, users can run the torches in unison or independently, enabling customized setups for different shapes, such as flat plates, inner pipes, or cylindrical grinding rollers.
