This hardness is achieved through a high concentration of primary chromium carbides (M7C3) embedded in a stable austenitic matrix, providing the optimal balance of sliding wear resistance and moderate impact toughness.
How do you weld wear plates onto excavator and wheel loader buckets?
CCO wear plates are bimetallic, composed of a mild steel backing plate and a cladding overlay. Welding is done on the mild steel backing side using conventional low-hydrogen electrodes or flux-cored wire (such as E7018 or ER70S-6). Plug welding slots or perimeter structural welds are recommended to ensure secure adhesion to the bucket base.
Can weld-on wear plates be cold formed or bent to fit curved surfaces?
Yes. The structural backing steel is ductile enough to allow cold bending. Due to the high hardness of the overlay, cross-cracks will naturally occur during bending; these relief cracks are normal and do not compromise the performance or adhesion of the wear plate as long as they run perpendicular to the direction of welding.
