Why are there stress-relief cracks on the surface of CCO plates?
Stress-relief cracks are a normal and essential feature of high-chromium carbide overlay plates. They are formed during the cooling phase of the welding process due to the thermal expansion differences between the backing plate and the overlay. These cracks relieve tension and prevent the plate from warping or distorting during subsequent cutting, shaping, and installation. They do not compromise wear performance.
Can CCO wear plates be bent or formed?
Yes, they can be formed. Depending on the plate thickness and backing material, CCO plates can be rolled or bent. Normally, bending is performed with the overlay layer on the inside (tension on the backing) or on the outside (compression on the backing), adhering to minimum radius guidelines based on overall plate thickness.
How are these hardfaced composite plates cut?
Because the chromium carbide overlay layer cannot be cut with a standard oxygen-fuel torch, they must be cut using plasma arc cutting, laser cutting, or high-pressure waterjet. Cutting is typically executed from the carbon steel backing side toward the overlay to ensure clean, precise edges.
