In modern industrial operations, equipment failure caused by severe mechanical wear accounts for billions of dollars in downtime and component replacements annually. Heavy manufacturing sectors such as mining, cement production, steelmaking, power generation, and port logistics are constantly seeking methods to prolong machinery service lifetimes. The primary technique utilized to combat this degradation is hardfacing (weld cladding), which deposits wear-resistant alloy coatings onto vulnerable metal components.
Industrial wear is not a singular phenomenon but rather a combination of degradation processes including abrasion, erosion, impact, and corrosive wear. The selecting of an appropriate hardfacing electrode or wire requires an analysis of these mechanisms. Under standard DIN 8555 requirements, weld overlays are categorized by their metallurgical composition and resistance behaviors.
Chromium Carbide Overlay (CCO) alloys represent the benchmark for extreme grinding abrasion resistance. The microstructure of CCO consists of primary M7C3 chromium-rich carbides embedded within a tough eutectic matrix. The presence of these hard carbides, which typically measure between 1200 and 1600 HV (Vickers Hardness), acts as a barrier against sliding micro-ploughing and gouging abrasion. Under lower impact scenarios, CCO plates and electrodes outperform conventional heat-treated carbon steels by a ratio of up to 10:1.
