Advanced Surface Technology: Custom CCO and Hardox Wear Plate Engineering

In the heavy industrial ecosystem, severe wear is the primary driver of unscheduled downtime and capital expense. Selecting the appropriate structural and surface protection materials is paramount for maintaining mechanical throughput. While quenched and tempered martensitic steel plates, such as those manufactured under the Hardox® trademark, serve as the gold standard for high-impact structural strength, modern abrasive environments require specialized Chromium Carbide Overlay (CCO) bimetallic wear plates to achieve optimal longevity. This whitepaper analyzes the structural differences, procurement drivers, and application solutions of these material classes.

The Metallurgical Mechanics of Industrial Wear: Hardox vs. CCO

To establish high Information Gain for industrial engineers, we must examine the microstructural differences between martensitic abrasion-resistant (AR) steel and bimetallic overlays:

  • Martensitic Steel (Hardox): Manufactured via controlled quenching and tempering. This creates a uniform, fine-grained martensitic structure. The primary advantage is isotropic mechanical properties, allowing the plate to serve as both a structural member and a wear liner. It handles intense impact loads without cracking.
  • Bimetallic Chromium Carbide Overlay (CCO): Produced by depositing a high-alloy, hypereutectic chromium layer onto a ductile mild steel backing. The resulting microstructure contains a high volume fraction of primary M7C3 chromium carbides (with micro-hardness values exceeding 1500 HV) embedded in a tough eutectic matrix. The base plate handles the mechanical load, while the overlay layer resists severe sliding abrasion.

Macro-Industrial Procurement Trends and Challenges

Global procurement teams in mining, cement, steel, and power generation have shifted from evaluating *initial acquisition cost* to analyzing the **Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)**. In high-abrasion environments, upgrading standard structural steel or basic AR400 plates to premium CCO overlays extends service life by 3x to 10x. This directly reduces maintenance labor overhead, system inspection frequencies, and loss of production during replacement shutdowns.

Furthermore, regional logistics, custom duty structures, and strict technical specifications highlight the value of partnering with experienced manufacturers. By leveraging mature, advanced metal surface hardfacing technologies and maintaining raw material compliance, qualified factories deliver consistent, long-term wear protection solutions globally.

The Future Technical Roadmap of Hardfacing Engineering

The hardfacing industry is evolving toward automation, micro-alloy optimization, and sustainable production:

  • Automated Numerical Controls: Modern production lines use multi-gun cladding machines equipped with digital interfaces to regulate heat input, speed, and oscillation. This ensures a uniform microstructure and minimizes dilution from the base steel.
  • Complex Carbide Formulations: Adding refractory elements like Niobium (Nb), Titanium (Ti), and Boron (B) creates secondary carbides that enhance thermal stability, allowing liners to operate at temperatures up to 600°C.
  • Stress-Relief Checkering Patterns: Engineered cracking patterns during cooling release residual tensile stresses, ensuring the plate remains flat and performs reliably under thermal and mechanical cycles.

Surfacing Equipment, Machining & Roll Repair

Welding Equipment

RX® Surfacing Equipment is built with a high degree of automation, high welding efficiency, a small footprint, easy maintenance, and low power consumption. It is suitable for producing various wear-resistant composite steel plates. The surfacing system supports solid-core, flux-cored, and self-shielded flux-cored wire options, and accommodates open-arc, powder-addition, and submerged arc welding. The equipment features an advanced numerical control system accessed through a 10.2-inch touchscreen. It provides adjustable swing welding at uniform speeds, allowing wide and narrow welding paths to be tailored. The welding mechanism has four welding guns, which can work simultaneously or independently; the centralized control unit flexibly adjusts welding parameters to realize intelligent welding.

Machining and Engineering

RX® has many years of experience and solutions for making machinery and equipment, machining accessories, and engineering projects. This expertise allows us to deliver fully customized parts with precise tolerances and high-quality structural performance.

Roll Repair

Rolls and grinding rolls are divided into two main categories: rolls and grinding rolls. Rolls are mostly used in iron and steel production lines, continuous casting, open billet, and conveyor systems. Grinding rolls are mostly used in steel, cement, power, and mining sectors for pre-material crushing, coal mills, vertical mills, and roller presses. The life of these rolls directly determines the service life of the equipment and affects the cost of the finished product. RX® has many years of experience in the repair of rolls and mill rolls, helping companies improve the service life of their rolls and reduce their overall production costs.

Expert Engineering Q&A

Technical FAQ: Wear Plates & Hardfacing

Q1: What is the main structural difference between Hardox and CCO wear plates?
Hardox is a quenched and tempered martensitic single-layer steel plate that offers excellent structural strength and impact resistance. Chromium Carbide Overlay (CCO) is a bimetallic plate consisting of a structural base steel plate overlaid with a high-alloy, hypereutectic chromium carbide layer. While Hardox is ideal for structural components that encounter high impact, CCO provides significantly higher resistance to severe sliding abrasion.
Q2: How does temperature affect the performance of these wear plates?
Standard quenched and tempered steels like Hardox begin to lose their hardness and wear resistance when exposed to temperatures above 250°C due to tempering effects. In contrast, specialized Chromium Carbide Overlays can withstand working temperatures up to 600°C because the primary M7C3 chromium carbides remain stable at high temperatures, preventing rapid matrix softening.
Q3: Why do CCO plates exhibit hairline surface cracks, and do they affect performance?
Surface cracks (often called stress-relief cracks) are normal in CCO plates. They occur during the cooling phase of the hardfacing process to relieve residual tensile stresses in the high-hardness weld overlay. These cracks stop at the base plate and do not affect the structural integrity or the wear resistance of the plate.
Q4: What are the installation and welding guidelines for bimetallic wear plates?
Bimetallic plates can be cut using plasma arc processes and are typically secured using plug welding, countersunk bolts, or welded studs on the mild steel backing. Welding the hardfacing overlay directly should be avoided; instead, weld the ductile structural backing using standard low-hydrogen electrodes, and then fill the joint face with hardfacing wire to maintain wear continuity.
Q5: How does the agency relationship between Tangshan Runxing and German VAUTID benefit buyers?
Tangshan Runxing has been a qualified agent for VAUTID (Germany) for six consecutive years. This partnership ensures that our factory has direct access to premium, high-grade German wear materials. By integrating VAUTID alloy consumables into our manufacturing processes, we deliver export-grade plates with consistent hardness profiles and minimal dilution.
