Unlike solid welding wires, flux-cored wires (FCAW) consist of a high-purity metal sheath wrapped around a granular core of alloying powders, slag formers, and deoxidizers. When the arc is struck, these core materials melt to form a tailored alloy deposit. In the case of Ultra Core Welding Wires, the primary mechanism of wear protection is the crystallization of primary chromium carbides within a tough, austenitic matrix.
The microstructural arrangement is crucial. Under severe abrasion, soft matrices wash away, leaving carbides unsupported.
