Traditional heat-treated martensitic plates (like classical Hardox 400, 500, or 600 grades) offer excellent yield strength and structural toughness, making them highly effective for structures bearing substantial impact. However, when sliding abrasion and abrasive particle grinding dominate the environment, composite bimetallic wear plates, such as our RX®wp 7600, emerge as the optimal choice. Understanding how wear plates are processed is key to appreciating their value. Standard fabrication of a CCO bimetallic plate begins with selecting a carbon steel backing plate (typically ASTM A36 or Q235B) which acts as the ductile structural carrier. Using highly automated, CNC-controlled multi-gun open-arc surfacing equipment, a layer of high-chromium weld overlay is deposited.
During the cooling process, fine stress-relief cracks develop naturally perpendicular to the weld beads. These relief cracks do not penetrate the backing steel and are a hallmark of premium wear overlays, relieving residual stresses and preventing plate distortion. For specialized parts, precision machining processes (such as plasma arc cutting, countersunk bolt-hole drilling, and roll forming) are performed to transform the raw composite plate into custom-fitted wear liners that fit directly into field machinery without additional modifications.
