Understanding the Mechanics of Abrasive Wear

In heavy industrial processing, the mechanical deterioration of machinery due to abrasive sliding and impact is one of the single greatest contributors to downtime and high operating expenditures. Sliding abrasion, impingement by high-hardness mineral particles, and high-velocity gas streams carrying particulate matter erode metal substrates, causing catastrophic component thinning and structural failure.

Traditional structural steel sheets (like Q235B or Q355B) lack the grain microstructure necessary to block micro-cutting and scratching from materials like quartz, iron ore, and clinker. Bimetallic Chromium Carbide Overlay (CCO) plates address this by fusing a mild or low-alloy steel base with a hypereutectic overlay of chromium-rich alloy. The resulting microstructure contains hexagonal M7C3 primary carbides (with microhardness reaching 1200-1600 HV) embedded inside a supportive tough matrix. This prevents crack propagation and provides superior resistance to extreme abrasion.

What is the standard chemical composition of a CCO plate's overlay?

The overlay alloy usually contains 4.0% to 5.5% carbon (C) and 25% to 35% chromium (Cr). This ratio forms a hypereutectic microstructure where chromium-rich primary M7C3 carbides develop in a matrix of austenite and eutectic mixtures, providing strong resistance to sliding abrasion.

Why do CCO plates exhibit cracks on the welded surface?

The cracks are a normal result of stress relief. The high thermal input from welding combined with differing thermal expansion rates between the overlay and base plate causes cooling stress. The overlay relieves this stress by developing superficial micro-cracks perpendicular to the welding bead, which do not propagate into the base steel.

Can chromium carbide overlay plates be bent, formed, or rolled?

Yes, CCO plates can be cold-formed. Due to the hard overlay, they should be rolled with the overlay on the inside of the curve to close the stress relief cracks. The maximum bending radius depends on the plate and overlay thickness.

How are CCO plates welded or secured to existing chutes?

The plates are typically secured by plug welding through pre-cut holes or by welding the mild steel backing plate directly to the chute structure. They can also be installed using stud bolts welded to the back of the base plate.

How is the wear resistance of these plates measured?

Wear resistance is measured using the ASTM G65 dry sand rubber wheel test. Our plates show low volume loss under ASTM G65 testing, demonstrating their suitability for heavy abrasive sliding conditions.

What thickness configurations are commonly available?

We produce standard configurations such as 6+4 (6mm base + 4mm overlay), 8+6, 10+10, and 12+12. Custom thickness combinations can be manufactured to meet specific wear and impact requirements.
