Industrial Whitepaper: The Metallurgy of High-Performance Wear Protection

"In heavy industrial processing, material erosion and mechanical abrasion account for up to 70% of premature component failures. Implementing advanced metallurgical bimetallic solutions is not just an equipment upgrade—it is a critical operational strategy to maximize uptime and eliminate unscheduled maintenance cycles."

1. Macro Industrial Challenges & Wear Phenomena

Heavy industries such as mining, cement production, steel manufacturing, and power generation process billions of tons of abrasive materials annually. In doing so, their chutes, liners, crushers, and transfer pipes are subjected to severe wear mechanisms, specifically two-body and three-body sliding abrasion, high-velocity particle erosion, and mechanical impact. Standard carbon steels fail rapidly under these conditions, leading to frequent shutdowns, loss of throughput, and escalating labor costs.

By utilizing Chromium Carbide Overlay (CCO) wear plates, industrial operators achieve a vital upgrade in surface hardness. CCO composites feature a ductile backing plate (typically Q235B or ASTM A36 structural steel) welded to an extremely hard, alloy-rich overlay. The high concentration of primary chromium carbides (specifically Cr7C3 with micro-hardness exceeding 1500 HV) embedded within a tough eutectic matrix creates a barrier that resists micro-cutting and plowing mechanisms from sharp, hard minerals.

2. The Metallurgy of Chromium Carbide Overlays (CCO)

The wear-resistant properties of CCO depend strictly on the chemical formulation of the hardfacing layer and the solidification rate of the weld pool. The primary phase consists of hexagonal M7C3 carbides, which form during the initial stages of solidification. Runxing Machinery utilizes proprietary flux-cored wire formulations containing high carbon (3.5% to 5.5%) and high chromium (25% to 35%) levels to guarantee a minimum density of 35% primary chromium carbides in the microstructure.

The metallurgical bond between the base carbon steel and the wear overlay must have low dilution rates. High dilution from the base metal decreases carbon and chromium concentrations in the overlay, weakening wear resistance. Our advanced automatic hardfacing systems employ controlled heat inputs and sophisticated oscillating weld patterns to keep dilution below 10%, ensuring consistent hardness profiles (ranging from 58 to 65 HRC) from the surface down to the fusion line.

3. DIN 8555 Conformity and Welding Materials

The production of RX®wp 7600 wear plates complies with the stringent DIN 8555 standard, which categorizes hardfacing products according to chemical composition and mechanical stress properties. This guarantees that our bimetallic steel plates deliver stable quality in applications with severe impact and high stress. Our hardfacing wire configurations employ self-shielded open arc technology, eliminating the need for external shielding gas or flux, and ensuring seamless field repairs and rebuilds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Technical Answers to Common Wear Protection Inquiries

What is the difference between Chromium Carbide Overlay (CCO) and traditional Quenched and Tempered (Q&T) wear plates?
Quenched and Tempered (Q&T) steel plates, such as AR400 or AR500, derive their hardness from heat-treatment processes, typical yielding surface hardness levels between 360 and 500 HBW. However, when exposed to severe silica or mineral friction, they can wear down quickly.

In contrast, Chromium Carbide Overlay (CCO) plates utilize a bimetallic construction where high-carbon, high-chromium alloys are welded onto structural steel. The primary chromium carbides (Cr7C3) reach micro-hardness ratings of 1500 to 2000 HV. This structural hardness enables CCO plates to outlast standard Q&T plates by up to 5 to 10 times in abrasive settings.
Why are there cracks on the surface of Chromium Carbide Overlay wear plates?
The fine transverse cracks visible on the surface of CCO plates are stress-relief cracks. Because the wear-resistant overlay and the structural backing plate are composed of different metals, they expand and contract at different rates during the high-temperature welding process.

These relief cracks form naturally during cooling to dissipate residual stress. They do not compromise the wear resistance or structural integrity of the plate, and they do not propagate into the ductile steel backing.
How does the partnership between Tangshan Runxing and Hebei Yuwan International Trade operate?
Tangshan Runxing Machinery Co., Ltd. manages all research, design, engineering, and manufacturing.

To streamline overseas shipments, Hebei Yuwan International Trade Co., Ltd. serves as our authorized export agent. They manage customs clearance, compliance reporting, shipping logistics, and transaction settlements. This specialization helps ensure our international shipments arrive on schedule and comply with regional import regulations.
Can CCO wear plates be formed, bent, or welded to existing structures?
Yes. The structural steel backing (typically Q235B or ASTM A36) remains ductile, allowing CCO plates to be formed and rolled into curved shapes for chutes, pipes, and cyclones.

They can be welded directly onto steel structures using standard low-hydrogen welding electrodes on the carbon backing plate. They can also be cut using plasma arc processes or countersunk to allow for bolt-on installation.
