In the extraction, processing, and transportation of raw minerals, metals, and cement, mechanical parts are subjected to severe wear mechanisms. Traditional structural steels or even heat-treated alloys quickly fail under persistent high-stress abrasion. Our technical analysis investigates how Runxing's Chromium Carbide Overlay (CCO) plates extend operational lifespans by up to 10 times compared to structural steel.
Runxing's CCO wear plates are manufactured by deposit-welding high-chromium, high-carbon alloys onto a ductile structural steel backing (typically Q235B or Q345B). The key to the plate's wear resistance lies in its hypereutectic microstructure. During solidification, primary chromium carbides (specifically M7C3 type) crystallize out of the melt.
These M7C3 carbides possess a microhardness ranging between 1200 and 1600 HV (Vickers hardness), which is significantly harder than quartz and common mineral abrasives. The supporting matrix of eutectic chromium carbides and austenite provides the necessary toughness to prevent micro-fracturing under moderate impact.
Buyers often wonder about the cracks present on the surface of CCO plates. This is a natural physical phenomenon known as "relief checking." During the cooling process of the weld overlay, the chromium carbide layer shrinks at a different rate than the ductile steel backing.
To relieve these thermal stresses, transverse micro-cracks form naturally across the weld beads. These relief cracks do not propagate into the base steel substrate, nor do they diminish the plate's wear properties. In fact, they permit the plate to be cold-formed or rolled into complex shapes (such as chutes, pipes, and elbows) without introducing localized structural failure.

Our primary product lines consist of a mild or low-alloy steel base backing plate overlaid with a hypereutectic hardfacing alloy. The alloy deposit contains 25% to 35% chromium (Cr) and 4.0% to 5.5% carbon (C). The metallurgical microstructure displays primary M7C3 chromium carbides in an austenite-carbide eutectic matrix. This specific distribution achieves exceptional wear resistance while maintaining structural bendability.
These are called "stress-relief checking cracks." They develop naturally during cooling as the weld bead contractually shrinks over the base metal. They are a sign of proper overlay formulation and allow the composite plate to be rolled and fabricated into pipes, cones, or segments without delamination. The cracks do not extend into the structural backing steel.

Yes. The carbon steel backing layer can be welded easily using conventional E7018 electrodes or standard solid wires. The overlay surface can be cut using plasma arc, laser cutting, or high-pressure water jet. The plate can also be pre-drilled or fabricated with rear weld-studs for quick bolt-on liner replacement.
Standard Runxing Chromium Carbide plates are suitable for applications up to 350°C. For applications exceeding this range (up to 750°C), such as sinter plant chutes or hot power generation ducts, we produce specialty grades utilizing high-temperature elements (such as Tungsten, Niobium, and Molybdenum) that retain their high-HRC mechanical properties at temperature.
