1. The Global Industrial & Commercial Landscape of Hardfacing

Modern industrial systems face extreme operating stresses. Severe abrasive wear, mechanical impacts, and chemical corrosion combine to degrade capital machinery. According to global industrial tribology data, industrial machinery degradation due to wear costs global mining, cement, and steel operations billions of dollars in downtime and replacement parts annually. Overcoming this requires advanced metallurgy that goes beyond traditional structural steel.

The global hardfacing market has evolved from using simple carbon steel plating to utilizing Hypereutectic Chromium Carbide Overlays (CCO). By using arc welding processes to deposit high-chromium alloy materials onto strong carbon steel backings, manufacturers create composite materials. These composites feature excellent surface hardness (typically 58-62 HRC) combined with the structural toughness and weldability of the structural backing plate.

Today, operations focus on maximizing **Information Gain** and **Operational Efficiency**. Buying wear materials is no longer just a purchasing decision; it is a long-term capital preservation strategy. Industrial operations demand proven microstructures, reliable hardness depth profiles, and consistent bead patterns to ensure predictable equipment life cycles.

2. Technological Roadmap & Metallurgical Advancements

At Tangshan Runxing Machinery Co., Ltd., we develop wear mitigation products based on structural and chemical optimization. Standard mild steel offers tensile strength but lacks resistance against high-stress grinding abrasion. By using flux-cored welding wires to apply a specialized overlay, we create a composite structure with high hardness and abrasion resistance.

Hypereutectic Microstructures

Our overlay materials are engineered to form hypereutectic microstructures with a high volume fraction of primary Cr7C3 carbides. These carbides, with microhardnesses reaching up to 1500 HV, are embedded in a tough, support-providing eutectic matrix. This matrix prevents premature carbide breakout during impact, making the material highly wear-resistant.

Managing Welding Stresses and Dilution

Applying hard, high-alloy deposits on soft steel backings introduces thermal stresses. Our automated surfacing machines resolve this through precise temperature profiling and optimized cooling rates. This results in regular stress-relief cracks across the overlay bead. These cracks relieve residual welding stresses without affecting the overlay's adhesion to the backing plate.

We also monitor the dilution rate, which is the amount of backing steel that melts into the hardfacing overlay. By keeping dilution levels low, we ensure the overlay retains its full chromium and carbon content from the very first millimeter of the deposit.

Consistent Matrix Support

A tough austenitic matrix holds primary carbides in place, reducing fragmentation under mechanical impacts.

Controlled Dilution

Advanced open-arc surfacing controls heat input, keeping chemical composition consistent throughout the overlay thickness.

3. Industry Solutions and Case Studies

We provide tailored solutions for key industrial sectors. By analyzing how materials move, and the impact angles and temperatures involved in each application, we design wear-resistant solutions that extend equipment lifespans.

Cement and Aggregates Manufacturing

In cement production, equipment like raw material chutes, cyclone separators, and vertical roller mills are exposed to constant abrasive wear. For these applications, we supply custom-fabricated CCO plates and offer specialized roller repair services. These parts help prevent premature wear, maintaining stable plant production rates.

Heavy Duty Mining Operations

Mining operations require equipment that can withstand severe abrasion and heavy impact. We design chute liners, loader bucket liners, and hopper plates that handle high-velocity rock flows, helping operators extend maintenance intervals and lower operating costs.

Steelmaking and Metallurgy

Steel plants operate under demanding conditions, including high temperatures, heavy loads, and abrasive sintering materials. We use high-alloy weld overlays designed to retain their mechanical strength and wear resistance at elevated operating temperatures.

Power Generation and Utilities

Coal-fired power plants experience erosion in fuel delivery and dust collection systems. We manufacture wear-resistant piping, coal pulverizer components, and fan blades that protect against particle erosion, ensuring reliable system performance.

Ports and Dredging Operations

Handling bulk minerals at port terminals causes high abrasion on chutes and hoppers. We supply CCO plates and wear components built to resist both severe abrasive wear and coastal atmospheric corrosion.

Deep Technical Q&A

Frequently Asked Questions About Wear Materials & Hardfacing

Technical answers to key questions about metallurgy, wear-resistant design, and product application parameters.

What is a Chromium Carbide Overlay (CCO) wear plate, and how is it manufactured?

A CCO wear plate is a composite material consisting of a structural steel base plate (such as Q235B or Q355) overlaid with a highly alloyed, wear-resistant weld deposit. This deposit is applied using automated open-arc or submerged-arc cladding systems. The weld overlay contains a high volume fraction of primary chromium carbides (Cr7C3) embedded in an iron-rich matrix, which provides excellent wear resistance against severe abrasive particles.

Why do wear-resistant overlay plates have surface stress-relief cracks?

The transverse cracks visible on CCO plates are stress-relief cracks. Because of the thermal expansion difference between the alloy overlay and the carbon steel backing plate, cooling stresses accumulate during welding. These micro-cracks form naturally to relieve this tension. They do not penetrate the structural backing plate and do not affect the overlay's adhesion, performance, or structural integrity.

How does a bimetallic CCO wear plate compare to quenched abrasion-resistant (AR) steels?

Quenched and tempered steel plates (like AR400 or AR500) rely on carbon hardness achieved through heat treatment, offering uniform hardness throughout. In contrast, CCO plates feature high-hardness chromium carbides (Cr7C3) with microhardnesses up to 1500 HV. Under abrasive conditions, CCO plates typically outlast traditional quenched AR steels by 4 to 10 times, making them a more cost-effective choice for severe wear environments.

Can Chromium Carbide Overlay plates be cold-formed or welded in the field?

Yes, CCO plates can be cold-formed, rolled, and welded. The soft structural backing plate can be welded to existing steel structures using standard consumables (like E7018). The overlay side can then be capped using hardfacing electrodes to ensure continuous wear protection. The backing plate also allows the material to be rolled to conform to curved surfaces, such as conveyor chutes or pipe shapes.

What role do automated cladding machines play in ensuring consistent quality?

Automated cladding machines use multi-gun CNC controls to maintain uniform welding speed, oscillation width, and heat input. This precise control results in consistent deposit thickness, even carbide distribution, and a uniform depth of penetration, avoiding high-dilution spots that could compromise the wear resistance of the overlay.

How does the partnership with VAUTID benefit Runxing's product offerings?

Our partnership with German brand VAUTID gives us access to high-performance, specialized alloy formulations. Using VAUTID's established metallurgical standards, we manufacture wear-resistant products that deliver consistent, reliable performance under severe industrial operating conditions.
