Engineered to mitigate harsh tribological issues in high-stress operating environments worldwide.
Industrial abrasion is a major factor in downtime, component failure, and operational expense across heavy industries. It is estimated that material wear accounts for up to 3% to 5% of a developing nation's gross national product in maintenance costs. Mitigating these losses requires more than standard structural steel. It demands advanced materials engineering. Choosing the right wear-resistant materials is critical for maintaining equipment availability, minimizing downtime, and ensuring predictable maintenance cycles.
Wear mechanisms are typically categorized into abrasion, adhesion, erosion, corrosion, and fatigue. In mining, cement, and power production, the primary modes of failure are abrasive and erosive wear. Abrasive wear occurs when hard particles slice across a softer metallic surface, removing material. Erosive wear is caused by the kinetic impact of solid or liquid particles suspended in a gas or liquid carrier hitting a surface.
To resist these forces, modern metallurgy relies on the deposition of a hard, carbide-rich layer over a ductile structural backing plate. This is the foundation of Chromium Carbide Overlay (CCO) wear plates. CCO combines structural durability and high wear resistance by using a mild steel backing to absorb mechanical impact, and a hypereutectic chromium carbide overlay to resist abrasive forces.

The performance of hardfaced plates depends on their carbide microstructure. Standard structural overlays often suffer from dilution, where carbon and chromium from the weld pool mix with the base carbon steel, lowering the overall hardness.
Our manufacturing process controls dilution rates, keeping them below 10% in the outer wear layer. This ensures the deposition has high levels of primary M7C3 chromium carbides (with hardness levels up to 1500 HV) distributed in a tough, hard matrix. Our typical chromium content ranges from 25% to 40%, and carbon content ranges from 4.0% to 5.5%, resulting in a material hardness of 58–62 HRC. This chemical composition is designed to withstand sliding abrasion under high-temperature and high-impact conditions.
Targeted solutions developed for specific operational conditions in heavy industries.
The key issue for any cement plant lies in the availability of critical equipment. The key to equipment availability is wear resistance, and the performance of wear-resistant products determines the operating time of critical equipment.

read more >The future of wear protection lies in the development of more complex microstructures. While chromium carbide remains a cost-effective standard, newer wear-resistant alloys are introducing secondary carbides—such as niobium, vanadium, and boron carbides—to the weld pool. This additions help refine the alloy matrix, improving performance in applications that involve both high abrasion and mechanical impact.
No two operations have identical wear conditions. Industrial wear protection requires customized solutions based on the specific operating environment. For instance, in coal-fired power plants, pulverized coal lines face high-velocity abrasive erosion. In this environment, alumina ceramic liners or thinner, high-chromium overlay pipes are typically chosen to prevent blockages while maintaining wear resistance.
In contrast, cement plant vertical roller mills and crusher jaws experience high compressive loads alongside abrasion. For these applications, we recommend in-situ rebuilding using hardfacing wires like our RX-m Series, combined with structural roller repair. This approach restores the worn profile and applies a new wear-resistant layer to withstand subsequent service runs.
